The Talis, or Talit, is a four cornered prayer shawl traditionally worn by men, and in more modern congregations women as well. Each of the four corners of the Talit is adorned with Tzitzit (fringes) which provide it with its religious significance. The Torah in Numbers 15:38 instructs the Jews to wear fringes on any four-cornered garment as a reminder of the commandments.
The rest of the design of the Talit is not significant to its primary use for the observance of the mitzvah and may range from simple vertical stripes to rich and colourful Jewish embroidery. A Talit is generally worn by married men (although some have the custom to wear it after Bar / Bat Mitzvah) during all morning services, when called up for an aliyah, at musaf services, all day on Yom Kippur, and at mincha on Tisha B'av.
Israel's Judaica stocks taleisim (prayer shawls) in a variety of sizes and colours. Since only a few are shown here, please contact us to inquire about the talises we have in our stores.
